The most important part of a loudspeaker is the part that most of us never see...the
design. Eminence has spent countless hours and dollars developing a lab where our engineers have the resources to produce and test designs for virtually every application known to our industry. This lab produces over 2,500 hand-built samples of over 1,200 prospective new designs each year. For that reason, Eminence now has in excess of 6,235 unique loudspeaker specifications on file.
The equipment in the Eminence lab is some of the finest in the industry. We have several measurement systems available for measuring SPL and impedance curves as well as distortion. These systems are the LMS (Loudspeaker Measurement System), Clio, and Audio Precision. The LMS system is used mainly to measure parameters and curves for Eminence manufactured woofers. The Clio system is utilized for distortion measurements and the Audio Precision System is devoted mainly to measurement and analysis of Eminence HF devices.
Eliminating unnecessary and unwanted distortion is also critical to the design of loudspeakers. Eminence employs the use of an Ansoft/Maxwell FEA (Finite Element Analysis) software package that analyzes magnetic fields within the motor structure of a loudspeaker. Understanding these fields helps our engineers design loudspeaker motors that exhibit lower distortion than would be possible without this system.
All of the design effort is for nothing if you cannot analyze the performance of the products you are producing. Eminence has developed a fully automated power test facility solely for this purpose. The Eminence facility boasts over 16,000 watts of amplification and 8 test channels. Eminence normally uses the EIA-426A power test standard, but can adapt to meet our customer's special power handling requirements.
The Eminence lab also regularly uses Harris Technology's enclosure and crossover design packages to aid our customers in the development of the best enclosures for their application. It is not the Eminence practice to design enclosures for our customers, our expertise lies in the design and production of the speaker. However, it is often necessary to fully understand the enclosure in order to produce the ideal woofer for the customer's application.
Most recently, Eminence has invested in a True Compliance spider tester. We have since modified this equipment so that it can measure the compliance of cones as well. This device is shared by the lab and our Quality Control department and is used to insure the quality of spiders and cones that will be used later in production.
No matter what your design parameters may be, one of our product design engineers can create a loudspeaker that will meet your needs. From car audio, professional audio, home audio and theater, musical instrument and specialty applications, we have the ability to design a speaker that will provide you with a better product for less.
